Carbon Cycle 1. Respiration Carbon dioxide is produced by all living organisms but the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere remains constant at approximately 0.04% 2. Photosynthesis The CO2 is removed by green plants in the presence of light. The carbohydrates produced is: • used for energy (for growth) • used for energy (for maintenance of the living structure) • stored • source of food for all consumers 3. Primary consumers Will use carbohydrates for energy in growth and repair They produce CO2 in the process 4. Secondary / tertiary consumers Will use carbohydrates for energy in growth and repair They produce CO2 in the process 5. use organic matter in dead plants and animals and their waste Decomposers (bacteria / fungi) and respire producing CO2 6. Combustion burning of fossil fuels (i.e. carbon which has been trapped for millions of years is released as CO2) Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere assimilation by plants plant respiration combustion animal respiration respiration by decomposers food for animals death litter decomposers
