Carbon dioxide is produced by all living organisms but the level
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere remains constant at
approximately 0.04%

Photosynthesis
The CO2 is removed by green plants in the presence of light. The
carbohydrates produced is:
• used for energy (for growth)
• used for energy (for maintenance of the living structure)
• stored
• source of food for all consumers

Will use carbohydrates for energy in growth and repair

consumers
Will use carbohydrates for energy in growth and repair
They produce CO2 in the process

use organic matter in dead plants and animals and their waste

(bacteria / fungi) and respire producing CO2

Combustion
burning of fossil fuels
(i.e. carbon which has been trapped for millions of years is
released as CO2)
