Two Types of Cells
Prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
What do all cells
have in common?


ALL cells have a cell
membrane,
cytoplasm, DNA, and
ribosomes
Cell membrane –
the flexible outer
covering of a cell that
controls what goes in
and out
What do all cells have in common?



Cytoplasm – the liquid
substance that fills up a
cell
DNA – cell instructions
Ribosomes- a part in a
cell that makes protein
according to cell
instructions
What are the 2 main types of cells?
1. Prokaryotic

Cells that lack a
nucleus
2. Eukaryotic

Cells that have a
nucleus
What is a nucleus?

Nucleus – Holds the genetic information of the
cell (DNA) and controls most cell activities
Prokaryotic Cells




Small, simple cells
with a cell membrane,
cytoplasm, DNA, &
ribosomes
No nucleus
Single-celled
(unicellular)
organisms
Example: bacteria
Example of Prokaryotic Cells
-Bacteria
Example of Prokaryotic Cells
-Nostoc (Cyanobacteria)
Prokaryotic Cell Diagram
Eukaryotic Cells





Larger more complex
cells with a cell
membrane, cytoplasm,
DNA, & ribosomes
Have a nucleus and other
organelles
Organelles - specialized
parts inside a cell with a
particular function
Either single-celled or
part of a multicellular
organism
Example: plant, animal,
fungus, protists
Examples of Eukaryotic Cells
-Plant and Animal
Spirogyra (Protist)
