BLUE BLUBBER JELLYFISH Catostylus mosaicus Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 PHOTOZOO.ORG CLASSIFICATION NOT LISTED Class: Scyphozoa Order: Rhizostomeae Family: Catostylidae Identification : Dome-shaped bell reaching a diameter up to 35 cm. Bell surface is finely granulous. Short and thick arms with plumose appendages. Color ranges from grey to blue-green or even bright blue with brown arm appendages. No recognized subspecies Range: The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Pakistan and India to Malaysia, south to north Australia. Habitat : Mostly coastal waters, sometimes in estuaries. NOT LISTED Behavior: Often occurs in big groups. Pelagic species, feeding on zooplankton, fish larvae, other jellyfishes and small young shrimps. Adult females lay eggs. Status in the wild: The species has yet to be assessed in the Red List but so far seems to be at least locally common. Often collected and farm raised for food. UNCOMMON In captivity: This species is probably the commonest species of its genus in captivity in Asia and possibly also in Europe and America. Displayed in most major Asian collections featuring jellyfishes. Known to have been bred in captivity.
