MIDWEST: STUDY GUIDE
1. The main difference between the Central Plains and the Great Plains is that the Central Plains gets more
precipitation.
2. Prairie soil is very fertile because the grasses leave behind matter that enriches the soil.
3. Half of the corn grown in the Central Plains is used for livestock food.
4. The main result of a drought is that many crops die.
5. Blizzards, tornadoes, and hailstorms are all likely to occur on the Interior Plains.
6. Many settlers on the Great Plains built their homes out of sod.
7. Winter wheat changed farming on the Great Plains.
8. Urbanization was caused by farm families that moved to the cities.
9. Early Texas ranchers drove herds of cattle north to the railroads in order to get their cattle to cities in the
East.
10. Owners of factories make decisions about what the factory produces in a free enterprise economy.
11. A fall in the demand for a good/service often leads to a fall in the supply.
12. Meat-packaging plants are often found near cattle ranches.
13. Plains regions are mostly flat land.
14. Most of the world’s plains are used for growing food.
15. Know how to read a picture graph in order to answer questions about food production in the Midwest.
16. Know the similarities and differences between the Interior Plains and the Pampa of Argentina.
a. Similarities: Their land is flat, they have few trees in the west, the soil is rich, they grow wheat
and corn, and raise cattle.
b. Differences: growing seasons, wheat and corn from the Pampa is exported to other countries.
17. John Deere invented the steel plow which cut through sod better and made tilling the prairie soil easier.
18. Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper which was used to cut down plants so that farmers could harvest
more than 10 acres of wheat a day.
