is a type of advertisement featured on television, radio, print or other media. Whereas
the objective of a standard advertisement is to market a product, a PSA is intended to
change the public interest, by raising awareness of an issue, affecting public attitudes,
and potentially stimulating action”.
Assignment Overview
This task will require students to complete a 3 day reflection of their own internal
monologue regarding their thoughts about themselves and others. Students will then
utilize this information and working in groups to create a Public Service Advertisement
focused on one of the predominate issues found in the groups internal monologue
reflection (some topics include but are not limited to Depression, Body Image, Phobias
and Anxiety, etc).
Task 1 – Individual Reflection
a) For three days keep a detailed record of your thoughts about yourself and others
as you go through your day. They journal can be completed in the traditional pen
and paper manner, or it can utilize social media (i.e. Twitter, Facebook or a blog)
or, finally, an oral reflection using voice recorders (a combination of all three is
also acceptable). You MUST submit a copy or transcript of your reflection.
b) In 1-2 paragraphs, explain the themes that you noticed during your 3 day
reflection. How do your thoughts and concerns about others thoughts about you
shape or influence your thoughts and behaviour.
c) In 1-2 paragraphs, research Charles Horton Cooley’s “looking glass” theory and
use this theory to explain your personal reflection.
Task 2 – Public Service Advertisement
In groups of 3, brainstorm some of the common themes that your group found in their
individual reflections. Choose one of the themes that your group feels is a common issue
amongst high school students (i.e. Anxiety, Body Image, Depression, Phobias/Fears,
Being overwhelmed, Peer Pressure, etc) and create a taped Public Service
Advertisement. Each ad must be roughly 1-2 minutes in length and must showcase your
issue. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the PSA genre of advertising as well as
brainstorming, as a group, what makes an effective and meaning advertisement for
television.
