5.6 The Standard Form of a
Linear Equation
slope-intercept ???
y = mx + b
We can graph using the y
intercept and slope.
standard form - Ax + By = C
You can graph by getting the
x intercept and the y
intercept.
Two important facts about
standard form:
1. A, B, C must be integers.
(no fractions or decimals)
2. A cannot be negative. (okay
for B and/or C to be negative.)
Write y = 2 x - 3 in standard form.
5
Write -5x + 11 = 1 y in standard form.
2
Write the standard form of an
equation of the line passing
through (-4,3) with a slope of 2.
Write the standard form of
the equation of the line
passing through (-5, 1) with a
slope of
?.
Write the standard form of
an equation
a. of the horizontal line
b. of the vertical line
Write the standard form of
the equation:
a. of the horizontal line
through (6,-5)
b. of the vertical line through
(-2,-7)
Equations of lines to note:
Slope intercept y = mx + b
Point slope form y - y1 = m ( x - x1
Vertical Line (undefined slope)
x=a
Horizontal Line (zero slope)
y=b
Standard form
Ax + By = C, where A,B,C are
real numbers and A and B are
not both zero.
)
Write the equation in
standard form with integer
coefficients.
-4x + 5y + 16 = 0
