Division Rules The following division rules will help in identifying numbers which are divisible by the following: 2: If a number is even, it is divisible by 2. Example: 3: 26 is even, therefore it is divisible by 2 If the sum of a number’s digits is divisible by 3, then the number is divisible by 3. Example: 123, 1 + 2 + 3 = 6, 6 is divisible by 3 so 123 is divisible by 3 If the number is too big, you can continue adding the digits until you get a smaller number. Example: 4: If the last two digits of a number are divisible by 4, then the number is divisible by 4. Example: 5: 4,175,976, 4 + 1 + 7 + 5 + 9 + 7 + 6 = 39. If you do not know if 39 is divisible by 3, then add the digits again; 3 + 9 = 12. 12 is divisible by 3, so 39 is also divisible by 3, which means that 4,175,976 is divisible by 3. 1,216, 16 is divisible by 4 so 1,216 is divisible by 4 If a number ends in either 0 or 5, then the number is divisible by 5 Example: 1,535, ends in 5 so 1,535 is divisible by 5 6: If a number is both even and divisible by 3, then the number is divisible by 6. Example: 8: If the last three digits of a number are divisible by 8, then the number is divisible by 8. Example: 9: 1242, is even and 1 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 9 which is divisible by 3 so 1,242 is divisible by 6. 12,848, 848 is divisible by 8 so 12,848 is divisible by 8 If the sum of a number’s digits is divisible by 9, then the number is divisible by 9. Example: 756, 7 + 5 + 6 = 18, 18 is divisible by 9 so 756 is divisible by 9 If the number is too big, you can continue adding the digits until you get a smaller number. Example: 10: 4,175,676, 4 + 1 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 6 = 36. If you do not know if 36 is divisible by 9, then add the digits again; 3 + 6 = 9. 9 is divisible by 9, so 36 is also divisible by 9, which means that 4,175,676 is divisible by 3. If a number ends in 0, then it is divisible by 10. Example: 1,230 ends in 0, so 1,230 is divisible by 10
