Activity 1 Sorting Information Calories from Food Load ViewPoint and open the Countries file. Use the Search tool to select countries outside the continents of Europe and North America. Use the Sort tool to sort the Daily Calorie Intake per person (CalsPerDay) into a descending order. Go to List View and look to the bottom of the CalsPerDay column. Some countries have ‘0’ here. Why do you think this is so? Remove those countries for which the Cals/day information is ‘0’. Which continents contain the bottom thirty countries in the list? Does the position of any countries in the sorted list surprise you? Can you suggest any explanations? Faraway Places Activity 2 Searching the Information Doctors Load ViewPoint and open the Countries file. Search for all the countries where each doctor is shared by more than 1000 people. Now sort the information on the People per Doctor (PopPerDoc) field, choosing the ‘Decreasing’ option. Which continent has the worst ratio of doctors and patients? You might like to plot a graph to help you with this question. Carry out a further search on these chosen sheets to exclude this continent. Which of the remaining countries have the poorest ratio of doctors and patients? Do the statistics for infant mortality and life expectancy show any links with the numbers of doctors available? Faraway Places Activity 3 Drawing Graphs Countries and Population Load ViewPoint and open the Countries file. Go to the Graph View and draw a pie chart based on the ‘Continents’ fields. On the Graph menu choose pie segment values. This will show you the number of countries in each continent. Print or save this graph. Draw a new pie chart using the ‘Continents’ and the ‘Population’ fields. Your new graph will display the total population of each continent (in millions). Which continent has the greatest population? And which has the smallest? Where does Europe come in order of population size? You might want to change the graph type to a bar chart to help with this question. Faraway Places Activity 4 More Graphs Imports and Exports Load ViewPoint and open the Economies file. Go to the List View and use the search tool to remove all countries whose imports are shown to be worth more than 80,000 million dollars. How many countries remain? Plot a graph using ‘Country’ as the first question (x axis), and ‘Imports’ as the second question (y axis). Draw a bar graph. This will show the value of imports for each of the countries. Create a second graph. Use ‘Country’ as the first question again, and add ‘Exports’ to the second question. Plot the graph, and you will see imports and exports for each of the developing countries. Which of these countries’ exports are worth more than their imports? Now repeat this activity, comparing the AgPropGDP and IndPropGDP fields. What have you discovered? Faraway Places Activity 5 A Selection of Questions Using the Countries file Is Christianity practised in more African countries than in Asia? Does adult literacy improve when there are more children at school? Try drawing a scatter graph to explore this. Compare the countries where English, French or Spanish are major languages. Do you detect any patterns in the data for these groups of countries? Which country compares most closely with the United Kingdom in terms of the following statistics: population, area, GDP per person? Using the Economies file Which country has the highest Agricultural output as a proportion of GDP? And which country has the lowest known output? Which countries have high commissions in London rather than embassies? Can you suggest why this is? Choose the countries for which tourism statistics are available. Use the Statistics tool to calculate the average number of tourists. Does the United Kingdom have more or less tourists than this each year? Which countries have no known oil refineries?
