RIOVOLT > future-brazil-beats
riovolt is a mix of brazilian sounds and flavours like samba, forró and bossa nova
with electronica, drum´n´bass, break beats, funk and jazz - perfectly suitable for
dancing, lounging, clubbing or just sitting on your sofa spacing away.
"riovolt is my very personal idea of ´sophisticated music that lifts you up and
makes you want to move your body´. I´m a ´sun-child´, and I think this reflects
in my music." says norbert küpper aka nobit, the composer, producer and above
all the soul of riovolt: "it´s about authencity, distinctiveness and uniqueness,
about deepness of feelings, complexity of thoughts and the simplicity of their
expressions - and of course it´s about groove!" yes, nobit knows what "groove"
means: he sucked it away as he grew up playing funk, fusion and soul as a
teenager and he immersed deep into it while living in rio de janeiro, brazil.
while riovolt on their first album "digital audio bossa" (which soon became topseller in japan) were squeezing samba and bossa nova rhythms through the
"funk-jazz-electrifyer", a secret combination of analog-psycho-acousticcodification-devices, this very same machine, constantly undergoing alchemistic
modifications, was used to produce the follow up album "sambarama", giving
continuity to the deep grooves, edgy melodies and jazzy atmospheres riovolt´s
charm is all about.
riovolt breaks borders with stilisic originality, in tune with the ongoing latino-hype
and at the same time a step ahead of current trends.
plus: riovolt "live" is an unforgetable experience:
a well balanced mixture of electronic and "hand made music". four excellent
musicians, perfectly performing with virtuosity, groove, hot solos and cool vibes.
the centre of attention on stage is the brazilian singer dey brizzo, who enchants the
audience with her voice and charme. next to her nobit, using fat electronic beats
and hypnotic acoustic percussion to make the crowd dance. the two are beeing
backed up by florian riedl on sax, flute and electronics and christian gall on
keyboards and samplers.
moreover riovolt perform in a more club-oriented, electronic outfit: dey brizzo on
vocals and exotic performance and nobit using "ableton live" on his laptop, vocoder
and "kaoss pad" to create a liquid electronic set.
plus nobit´s dj-set is a fusion of electro, drum´n´bass, house and tribal, mixed
smoothly and groovy to something nobit calls "future brazil beats".
how everything started:
born in munich, nobit started to take his first drum classes at the age of 11.
after leaving school, he studied classical percussion and piano at the richard
strauss conservatory, munich.
the curiosity to get to know other music and sounds from all over the world was
so big that in the early 90´s he went to asia. in india he learned how to play
tablas, in indonesia, thailand and singapore he got in touch with local musicians,
jamming in all kinds of music clubs. after one year in asia he went back to
europe and soon was on the road again.
next destination: usa. in san francisco he quickly got into the music scene
playing with pop, jazz and latin bands. back to germany, nobit moved to cologne
and founded the funky-brazilian band "agua na boca", getting closer to hip-hop
and electronic music. at the same time he was composing soundtracks for
movies and german television.
throughout this time nobit had one thing in mind: brazil.
in 1999 nobit moved to rio de janeiro. there he produced many brazilian artists
and bands, varying from traditional samba, forró, bossa nova to brazilian electro
and hip-hop.
in his sparetime, he started working on his solo project riovolt. taking the
chance to work with brazilian singers and musicians, he produced the first tracks
for the album "digital audio bossa", which was completed back in munich and
released on cd and vinyl by the italian label irma/la douce in november 2003.
soon a vinyl single including several remixes was released, "digital audio bossa"
became the labels top-seller-album in japan, and a variety of tracks appeared on
more than twentyfive compilations worldwide.
to contrast the electronic side of the studio productions, nobit set up an electroacoustic, jazz-oriented line-up and riovolt started playing live gigs.
using the valuable experience to "live-test" his song" on stage, nobit went on to
produce the second riovolt album "sambarama", which was released in november
2005. in january 2006 the first single "brisa" was released, including two remixes
by 12 fingers and one by sicania soul.
watch out: there is more to come...
