Polygon: Area and Perimeter Game
Teacher Directions
This hands-on game will give students a chance to practice geometry
vocabulary (specifically different types of the polygons) and area and
perimeter. Students earn points when they draw polygons with the
specificic area or perimeter indicated on their playing card.
Use the cards as the guided practice part of a lesson, a small group
teacher or parent-led math center, or an idependent game as
students finish work early.
1. Copy the Review Sheet, gameboard, and playing cards on
cardstock.
2. Cut apart cards and place in a plastic zip bag.
3. Laminate Review Sheet and gameboard OR put in plastic
sleeves. (Students will use dry erase markers to write on
gameboards.)
Student Directions:
1.
Get a gameboard (each player will need his/her own), dry erase marker, bag of playing
cards, and Review Sheet (if needed).
2.
Players take turns choosing a card and drawing polygons on the Gameboards with the
measurements from the cards.
YOU WILL NOT NEED A RULER.
 The area side of the gameboard is already divided into
square units. Remember…two half squares = one whole.
 Label your drawings on the perimeter side to show the
number of units per side of your polygon. (just estimate)
3.
If your partner(s) agrees that you have correctly completed the task on the card, add
your points to the tally box on your Gameboard. If a player is unable to create the polygon or
makes it incorrectly, he/she can ask another player for help. The” helper player(s)” will also get
points for that card.
4. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins

Right Angle
A flat shape with at least three straight sides and angles.
The shape is closed, which means the sides are connected. (Examples: triangle,
square, rectangle, pentagon, octagon,etc….)
The amount of space inside a polygon. It is measured with squares. (Square inches,
square miles, square units, …)etc.
The distance around the outside of a polygon. It can be measured with inches,
feet, yards, units, etc…
An angle that measures 90 degrees. These are the angles found in rectangles.
