Reflexive verbs in the passé composé
All reflexive verbs use être in the passé composé.
The conjugated form of être is placed after the reflexive pronoun, before the past
participle.
Je me suis lavé.
In most cases, the past participle agrees in number and gender with the subject/ reflexive
pronoun.
Elle s’est lavée.
The past participle does not agree when
1. there is a double arrow/ the object is split between the reflexive pronoun and a
part of the body:
Elle s’est lavé la figure.
2. the reflexive pronoun is not acting as the direct object:
Nous nous sommes écrit.
Reflexive verbs in commands
Only three command forms can exist:
Understood “tu”
understood “vous”
understood “nous”
You/ singular
You/ plural or polite
you and me/ (let) us
To form a command, you must
1. decide who is hearing/ receiving the command
2. decide what the action is
*remember to drop the “s” from the Tu form of ER verbs and Aller in
commands!
3. decide whether it is positive or negative
In positive commands, the verb and the reflexive pronoun remain to form commands.
Dépêche-toi!
Dépêchez-vous!
Dépêchons-nous!
Hurry!
Hurry!
Let’s hurry!
In negative commands, the verb and the reflexive pronoun switch and are surrounded by
the ne…pas.
Ne te dépêche pas!
Ne vous dépêchez pas!
Ne nous dépêchons pas!
Don’t hurry!
Don’t hurry!
Let’s not hurry!
