Classifying Triangles and the Exterior Angle Theorem
There are two ways to classify triangles – by sides and by angles.
Scalene
*No congruent sides
Isosceles
*at least 2 congruent sides
Acute
Right
*3 acute angles
*1 right angle
Equalateral
*3 congruent sides
Obtuse
*1 obtuse angle
Triangle Sum Theorem: The sum of the measures of the three interior angles of
a triangle is 180 degrees.
Exterior Angle Theorem: The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is equal
to the sum of the measure of the two remote interior angles.
Base angles of an Isosceles Triangle: The angles opposite the two congruent
sides of an isosceles triangle are called base angles.
Base angles of an isosceles triangle are congruent.
