Absolute Value
The absolute value of a number is it’s distance
from 0 on a number line
The absolute value of a number will NEVER be
negative!
Absolute Value is represented by two bars on
either side of the number.
Example: |-9| = 9 and |9| = 9 because both -9 and 9
are 9 spots away from zero.
Directions: Determine the absolute value of the following numbers:
(1) |- 4| = 4
(2) |14| = 14
(3) | - 12| = 12
(4) |-19.5| = 19.5
(5) |14.75| = 14
(6) |- 7 | = 7
(7) | -14 | = 14
(8) | 4 | = 4
(9) |24 | = 24
(10) | -24 | = 24
(11) | 12 | = 12
(12) |-14.75| = 14.75

Integers
An integer is a number with no fractional part.
Integers include...
(1) Counting or positive numbers; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
(2) Zero
(3) Positive numbers; -1, -2, -3, -4, -5
Negative Numbers work opposite of positive numbers. The farther you move from 0
with positive numbers, the larger the number is. With negative numbers, the farther
you move from zero, the smaller the number is.
Directions: Compare the following pairs of numbers using <, > or =
(1) 16 > 15
(2) -16 < -15
(3) 7 > -7
(4) -20 > -25
(5) -10 < -8
(6) 12 < 13
(7) -12 > -13
(8) -16 > -18
(9) 25 > 23
(10) -23 > -25
(11) -8 <-9
(12) -17 <-15
