Soegiharto* *Lecturer, department of Orthodontics ( TNR, 11 pt ) Faculty Dentistry University of Indonesia; jakarta ABSTRACT Class II division 1 malocclusion is a common phenomenon to be found in our daily orthodontic practice. This type of maloccusion is commonly, characterished by the presence of crowding and possibly a dental crossbite with proclined upper labial segment, yet.it may have a class I buccal segment on a mild class II skeletal base with overjet and overbite are normally increased. Depending on the degree of crowding extraction maybe necessary or arch development using an expansion appliance maybe indicated, or if the skeletal relationship is moderate to severe then growth modification may also be incated. Quite recently, the self-ligating system has re-emerged and gained attention from many academiclan and orthodontists, particularly the damon self-ligating system has been claimed to be able to reduce the need extraction by its ability to expand both maxillary and mandibular arch into a certainnatral extent with the soft-tissues as the natural boundaries. Although there are still some controversies liagering on many issues with regards to their claims, a recent invitro study appeared to prove its capabilities. In this case report, the treatment of an adolescent of indonesian Chinese descent female with class II division 1 malocclusion, moderate crowding on both arches and proclined upper and lower labial segment is described. Treatment undertaken on a non-extraction basis using the Damon self-ligating system with standard torque brackes and mechanics were slightly modified in comparison to the published Damon treatment protocols. After following about 1.5 years of treadment , treadment was ceased with good class I occlusion, consided upper and lower centre-lines, corrected upper and lower labial segment axial inclinations and most of all., the patient’s profile was maintained and good aesthetics and functional result achieved in this case, the Damon self-ligating system appeared to be capable of treating this case on a non-extraction basiss. However , case selection in confunction to proper diagnosis and treatment planning still remain as the key to the success of orthodontict treatment with any appliance system used.
