RESPIRATION, CIRCULATION, AND EXCRETION
Get the Big Picture
Read the paragraphs in the boxes. Then answer the questions.
The respiratory system, the circulatory system, and the urinary system are very
important for maintaining homeostasis—your body’s constant internal environment.
The respiratory system breathes in oxygen and takes it into the body. It also breathes out
waste carbon dioxide.

The circulatory system delivers oxygen from the respiratory system and nutrients from
digestion to your body’s tissues. It also picks up waste products, such as carbon dioxide, from
tissues and carries them out of the body. Carbon dioxide goes out through the respiratory
system, other wastes exit through the urinary system.
Finally, the urinary system removes waste products from your blood through the
kidneys—two small, but powerful, filters.
