UN Biodiversity Conference, Cancun, Mexico 2016 2-17 December 2016 High Level Ministerial Segment (HLS) 2-3 December 2016 - The High Level Ministerial Segment, hosted by the Government of Mexico and organized in consultation with the Bureau of the COP and the Executive Secretary of the CBD, sets the scene to provide the necessary political impetus to make progress on specific issues as well as to discuss challenges and opportunities. In addition to the Ministers responsible for issues relating to the CBD, the high level segment benefits from the participation of Ministers from other sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, as well as other guests. It also promotes the development of youth talent on biodiversity conservation and management. The forum is open to NGOs that might wish to involve themselves around COP issues. http://cop13.mx/en/civil-society-forum 1-2 Dec 3rd Science for Biodiversity Forum The forum serves as a meeting place to share knowledge, approaches and initiatives for mainstreaming biodiversity among scientists, policy-makers and other stakeholders specifically influencing sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism. 2-3 Dec 2016 Business and Biodiversity Forum The Forum focuses on the mainstreaming of biodiversity within productive sectors, including agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, as well as in cross-sectoral policies such as development and economic planning processes. Other important issues relevant for businesses that are addressed include natural capital accounting and financing, examining the links between climate change and biodiversity, and supply chain policies. The Forum is organized in two working days, each starting with a plenary session followed by several parallel panel discussions. More information and registration: www.cbd.int/business/meetings-events/2016.shtml http://cop13.mx/en/business-and-biodiversity-forum-2016 9-11 Dec Summit “Muuchtanbal” on Indigenous Experiences: Traditional Knowledge and Biological and Cultural Diversity The aim of the Summit “Muuchtanbal” on Indigenous Experiences, Traditional Knowledge and biological and cultural diversity is to present and share experiences from indigenous peoples and local communities, Parties International Organizations, on the contributions of traditional knowledge, and the cultural diversity across sectors Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry and Tourism for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The Summit will be finished with a regional cultural presentation and celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB). www.cbd.int/tk/summit.shtml 10-11 Dec 5th Global Biodiversity Summit of Cities and Subnational Governments The Secretariat of the CBD and the Government of Mexico, in close collaboration with CONABIO, ANAAE and ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), organizes the Cities Summit entitled: “Mainstreaming Biodiversity where Nature Matters Most”. The Summit gathers Ministers, Governors and Mayors from around the world to engage directly with national leaders for 195 countries and their key stakeholders. The overall goal of the Summit is to strengthen the global contribution of cities and other subnational governments in protecting biodiversity and the effective management of ecosystems which provide essential goods and services to our rapidly growing urban population. http://cop13.mx/en/global-biodiversity-summit-cities-subnational-governments TBD Parliamentarians and Biodiversity Forum Co-organized by GLOBE International and the CBD Secretariat. Discussions on political support to the goals of the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, and call for a transition to a new global economy where biodiversity, ecosystem services and natural capital are integrated into policy making processes at all levels of government and the private sector. 4-17 Dec Rio Conventions Pavilion The Rio Conventions Pavilion provides opportunities for Parties and organizations to highlight activities linking biodiversity, land management, and climate change, especially at national and sub-national levels. Among other things, the Rio Conventions Pavilion provides an opportunity to highlight how ecosystem-based approaches are successfully being used in climate change mitigation and adaptation. It brings together lecture series, web events and thematic displays, and it also provides opportunities to highlight a number of cross-cutting issues. www.riopavilion.org 4-17 Dec CEPA Fair The Fair on experiences and best practices in Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) is held throughout the COP. It provides an opportunity for Parties and Organizations to highlight their work and contribution to the implementation of the three objectives of the Convention.
