Unit 4: Energy
STANDARDS
Energy fundamentals (EF)
EF1 know that kinetic energy and potential energy are fundamental forms of energy.
EF2 know how to apply the formula KE = ½mv2
EF3 know the scale of basic units of energy, such as joule, kJ, calorie, and kcal.
EF4 can convert from one energy unit to another.
EF5 can demonstrate knowledge that temperature is a measurement of the average kinetic energy
of particles in a substance, and that at any temperature particles move with a range of
speeds.
EF6 can convert from one temperature unit to another for Kelvin, °C, and °F.
EF7 know that absolute zero is the theoretical lower limit of temperature at which all motion
stops, occurs at a temperature of 0K, and is a limit that can never be reached.
EF8 can differentiate between a solid, liquid, and a gas in terms of average distance between
particles, general arrangement of particles, and the motion of particles.
EF9 know how to interpret a velocity distribution curve at various temperatures for particles of
different molar masses.
EF10 know the relationship between chemical potential energy and…
a) distance between particles
b) chemical bond energy
EF11 know that the random motion of particles in a liquid or gas tend toward greater entropy.
EF12 can predict the change in entropy (∆S) in physical changes, such as phase changes, and
chemical reactions, such as those that involve a change in state or number of moles.
EF13 know the conditions that promote formation of Bose-Einstein condensates and plasmas.
EF14 know the sub-atomic particle arrangement of plasmas.
Energy changes (EC)
EC1 know the relationship between ∆H and change in chemical potential energy.
EC2 know the relationships between ∆H, endothermic and exothermic changes, and temperature
changes associated with chemical and physical changes.
EC3 know the endothermic and exothermic phase changes between solids, liquids, and gases.
EC4 can predict states of matter under standard atmospheric conditions for a substance based on
its melting point, boiling point, and or sublimation point.
EC5 can draw and interpret a heating/cooling curve.
Energy transfer between objects (ET)
ET1 know that at the atomic level particles change speeds after collisions, with a tendency for
fast particles to slow down and slow particles to speed up after collisions.
ET2 know the process of heat exchange between objects of different temperatures, and can
determine the net movement of heat between these objects
ET3 can apply the Law of Conservation of Energy in energy transformation problems.
ET4 can solve problems involving q=mc∆T.
ET5 can solve problems involving latent heat of a phase change.
Stoichiometry (St)
St11 can solve stoichiometry with enthalpy problems.
