Explain fully how earthquakes are caused.

Earthquakes are the sudden and violent shaking of the Earth’s surface.

Development:
Plates on the Earth’s surface are moved by convection currents. In some parts
of the world this results in plates pushing against each other or grinding past
each other.
When plates push against each other or grind past each other, this causes a
build up of pressure. Over time the pressure builds up.
Sometimes one plate will slip and release the pressure that has built up. This is
called the focus of the earthquake.
Tremors or shockwaves travel out from the focus and reach the outside of the
crust causing the ground to shake.
If an earthquake happens in a built up area like a city a lot of buildings may
collapse.
The part of the Earth’s surface that receives most power from the earthquake
is called the epicentre.
Example:
An example of where many earthquakes happen is along the San Andreas Fault
in California, U.S.A.
