Moving Charges in an Electric Field
1. A 5.0 x 10-4 kg charge of 4.8 x 10-19 C is dropped in an electric field. The
plates are 1.5 cm apart. The electric field strength is 1.8 x 1015 N/C.
Determine the net force on the object.
2. A 3.5 x 10-4 kg charge of 4.8 x 10-19 C is dropped in an electric field. The
electric field strength is 1.8 x 1015 N/C. Determine the net force on the
object. What acceleration will it have?
3. An 8.7 x 10-6 kg charge of 3.6. x 10-15 C is dropped in an electric field.
The electric field strength is 3.2 x 109 N/C. Determine the net
acceleration of the object. How fast is it traveling after 1.5 s? How far
will it have fallen in this time?
4. A 4.5 x 10-5 kg charge of 9.2 x 10-15 C is in an electric field. The electric
field strength is 3.2 x 1010 N/C. How far will it have fallen in 0.4 s? If
the plates are 15 cm apart, how long will it take to fall the distance
assuming it does not reach terminal velocity.
5. Millikan observed a droplet of unknown charge accelerating at -7.3
m/s2. He determined the mass of the droplet to be 5.3 x 10-5 kg. The
electric field strength at the time was 7.2 x 104 N/C. What charge was
on the droplet? How many elementary charges is this?
6. Professor Bennet observed a droplet of unknown charge accelerating at
+4.9 m/s2. He determined the mass of the droplet to be 2.1 x 10-7 kg.
The electric field strength at the time was 5.6 x 107 N/C. How many
elementary charges is this?
7. Make up your own question. Make up data to arrive at an answer of
acceleration of –4.5 m/s2.
