Objectives & Out-come
Assessment/ Evaluation
This course will cover the basics of physical optics including geometric
and wave optics. The nature of light will be first introduced together
with its behavior in different cases. Geometrical optics will deal with the
phenomena of reflection and refraction where light is considered as rays.
Image formation, mirrors, lenses, and more complex optical instruments
will be studied in detail. Wave optics will deal with the wave nature of
light and the resulting effects: interference and diffraction. Polarization
of light is also treated. A laboratory visit during the course will provide
students with first hand experience of modern research in optics.
(Knowledge &/ Skills gained via the course)
The students will be able to:
- Understand and describe the basics of physical optics
- Relate theoretical concepts to real world applications of optics
- Solve relevant geometrical and wave optics problems
