Introduction teachers A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of the great comedy plays by William Shakespeare. The play revolves around the adventures of four young lovers, a group of amateur actors and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The story takes place in Midsummer and is a complex farce featuring Hermia & Lysander and Helena & Demetrius. Their romantic intrigues are confused and complicated still further by entering the forest where Oberon, the King of the Fairies and his Queen, Titania, preside. Puck (or Robin Goodfellow) is a major character who is full of mischief and tricks. Other visitors to the enchanted forest include Bottom the weaver and his friends Snug, Snout, Quince and Flute the amateur dramatists who want to rehearse their terrible but hilarious version of the play Pyramus and Thisbe. QUINCE: Is all our company here? BOTTOM: Call them out one by one. QUINCE: This is the list of the actors who are going to act in the play at the wedding reception tonight. BOTTOM: First, Quince, tell us what the play is about, then read out the actors names. QUINCE: All right, our play is called The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thysbe. BOTTOM: And let me tell you, it’s a great piece of work and very funny. Now, call the names of the actors on the list. Men, gather ‘round for role call. QUINCE: Francis Flute FLUTE: Here. BOTTOM: Eh hem, what part will I be playing? QUINCE: You, Bottom, have been cast as Pyramus. BOTTOM: What is Pyramus, a lover or a tyrant? QUINCE: A lover who kills himself in the name of love. BOTTOM: I’ll have to cry to make my performance believable. And as soon as I start crying, the audience had better watch out because they’ll start crying, too. I’ll make tears pour out of their eyes like rain clouds. I’ll moan very believably. Quince, name the other actors. But, I’m really in the mood to play a tyrant. I could do a great job with Hercules or any other part that requires ranting and raving. Like this, listen: The raging rocks And shivering shocks Shall break the locks Of prison gates; Oh, that was truly inspired! Now, tell us who the other actors are. By the way, my performace just now was in the style of Hercules, the tyrant style. A lover would have to be weepier of course. QUINCE: Francis Flute FLUTE: QUINCE: Yes. FLUTE: What is Thysbe, a wandering knight? QUINCE: It is the lady that Pyramus must love. FLUTE: Oh, please, don’t make me play a woman. I’m trying to grow a beard. Flute, you will be playing the role of Thysbe. 2009 Face 2 Face Theatre Company, Madrid, España - [34] (91) 434-0284 - www.teatroeningles.com - [email protected] 12 Extracts Scene 2 (continued) QUINCE: BOTTOM: That doesn’t matter, you’ll wear a mask and you may speak as high as you want. ¨Thysne! Thysne!¨ ¨Ah, Pyramus, my lover dear, thy Thysne dear, thy lady dear.¨ QUINCE: No, no, you must play Pyramus. And Flute, you Thysbe. BOTTOM: Well, Okaaay, proceed then. QUINCE: Snout, you’ll play the part of the Lion. SNOUT: Um, can I use my script? I’m a slow learner. QUINCE: You just have to ‘roar,’ Snout. BOTTOM: Oh, ooh, let me play the Lion, too. I will roar so well that It’ll be an inspiration to anyone who hears me. I’ll roar so well that the audience will shout, ‘Let him roar again!’ QUINCE: No, Bottom, you’re playing Pyramus. I’ll play the part of the Wall and the Moon. Now, let’s all go get our costumes and meet back here for rehearsal in one hour. In that case, if I can wear a mask, let me play Thysbe, too. I’ll be Pyramus first: (As they exit) BOTTOM: Now, learn your lines everyone! Get back here in one hour! Okay, one hour! PUCK: This ought’a be good. 2009 Face 2 Face Theatre Company, Madrid, España - [34] (91) 434-0284 - www.teatroeningles.com - [email protected] 13 Extracts Scene 6 (Enter Lysander and Hermia.) LYSANDER Fair love, you faint with wandering in the wood; And to speak troth, I have forgot our way: We’ll rest us, Hermia, if you think it good, And tarry for the comfort of the day. HERMIA Be it so, Lysander: find you out a bed; For I upon this bank will rest my head. LYSANDER One turf shall serve as pillow for us both; One heart, one bed, two bosoms and one troth. HERMIA Nay, good Lysander; for my sake, my dear, Lie further off yet, do not lie so near. LYSANDER O, take the sense, sweet, of my innocence! Love takes the meaning in love’s conference. I mean, that my heart unto yours is knit So that but one heart we can make of it; Then by your side no bed-room me deny; For lying so, Hermia, I do not lie. HERMIA: Lysander riddles very prettily: Now much beshrew my manners and my pride, If Hermia meant to say Lysander lied. But, gentle friend, for love and courtesy Lie further off; in human modesty. LYSANDER Amen, amen, to that fair prayer, say I; And then end life when I end loyalty! Here is my bed: sleep give thee all his rest! HERMIA With half that wish the wisher’s eyes be press’d! 2009 Face 2 Face Theatre Company, Madrid, España - [34] (91) 434-0284 - www.teatroeningles.com - [email protected] 14 Vocabulary Vocabulary Love Dream Fairy Engaged Potion Wedding King/Queen Knight Juice Spell (hechizo) Flower Sing Sleep Tree Kill Cry Speak Fight Bride Groom Match the opposites Love Ugly Happy Servant Comedy Tragedy Night Awake Up Down Field Sour Sweet Town Asleep Day Master Sad Beautiful Hate 2009 Face 2 Face Theatre Company, Madrid, España - [34] (91) 434-0284 - www.teatroeningles.com - [email protected] 15 Don’t forget to take the wedding invitation with you to the theatre.
