Win cash for college
Hoxworth Blood Center is proud to offer several scholarships to
graduating seniors attending high school in Southwestern Ohio, Northern
Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Scholarship applications can be
downloaded from www.hoxworth.org/highschool and are available
through your high school guidance counselor.
Applicants for the Hoxworth High School Scholarship are rated in
the categories of academics, community service and school related
activities. An essay of 250 to 300 words on the topic, “Innovative
Ways To Turn High School Students Into Loyal Blood Donors,” is
required for scholarship consideration. This scholarship is for you if
you are active in your school and community, have at least a 2.5 GPA
and are a graduating senior. Being a blood donor is not a requirement
for potential candidates.
The Malcolm P. Adcock Memorial Scholarship is available to a graduating minority senior enrolling full-time next fall as an undergraduate
to study in the designated fields of Health Professions, Public Health,
Health Research, Nursing or another related field.

Maximize your donation
You may be asked to make an AUTOMATED RED CELL DONATION
because your blood type is in high demand in our community at the
time of your donation. During an automated red cell donation, blood is
drawn from one arm and channeled through a sterile, single-use tubing
kit to an automated machine. The automated system separates the red
blood cells from the whole blood, and then returns the remaining
blood components back to you through the same arm. The end result is
that two units of red blood cells are collected.
While two units of red cells are collected during the automated process,
the total volume of the donation is slightly less than that of a single
whole blood donation. This is because the remaining components
and saline are returned to you. An automated red cell donation takes
approximately 35 – 45 minutes. The entire visit will likely take 90 minutes.
Donor eligibility for this type of donation will be determined differently
and will vary by gender. See the chart below for eligibility requirements.

SAVE A LIFE
Let’s get started...
Hoxworth Blood Center’s High School Blood Program
offers you an excellent opportunity to learn firsthand
how to contribute to your community by making a
difference in the lives of people around you.
Students who participate in organizing blood drives
learn valuable skills in leadership, community service,
communication, project management, planning,
setting and reaching goals, and teamwork.
Joel Brown – Mason High School
Joel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in
2008. During his treatment, he received multiple units of
platelets and red cells.
Nikkia King – Sycamore High School Graduate
In high school, Nikkia started regular transfusions as part of her
therapy to prevent pain and complications of Sickle Cell Anemia.
She receives 12 units per year…more than 200 to date!
Questions? Raise your arm.
Who can donate blood?
In order to donate blood, you must be 17 years old (16-year-old donors can
donate with a signed parental consent), weigh at least 110 lbs., and be in
good health. See the Eligibility Requirements chart (far right panel). For
information regarding other states for Tattoo/Body Piercing, or more information regarding Parental Consent, Medications, Travel, Heart Disease and
Cancer, call Hoxworth Blood Center Donor Services at (513) 558–1304; toll-free
at (800) 265–1515, ext. 8-1304.
Is donating blood safe?
Donating blood is very safe. Hoxworth uses equipment and needles that are
prepackaged, sterilized, used only once, and then destroyed.
Should I tell my parents I am donating blood?
YES! It is a big decision to donate blood that should be shared with your
parents. If you are 16 years old, you will need to have a parental consent
signed in blue or black ink prior to your donation. Seventeen-year-old
donors in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana are not required to have parental
consent. Encourage your parents to become blood donors as well.
How long does it take to donate?
The blood donation process itself will take about 10 minutes. Slightly less
than a pint of blood is taken. Blood volume of most adults ranges from 10 to
12 pints. The entire process should take about an hour.
How will I feel after my donation?
Most people feel great after completing the donation process! Occasionally,
some donors may experience some light-headedness, which is why we
provide refreshments for donors. In rare instances, some donors may experience more pronounced post donation symptoms that require additional
follow up and care with blood drive donation staff. If you experience any
changes after the blood drive, call Hoxworth at (513) 558-1304.
How soon after my donation can I exercise or
practice sports?
We encourage you to wait until the next day before resuming strenuous
activities, such as heavy lifting, running, or contact sports.
How often can I donate?
You will be eligible to donate again in eight weeks if whole blood was collected,
16 weeks if you decided to participate in an automated red cell donation.
Can I donate if I recently got a tattoo or piercing?
Where does my blood go?
If your tattoo or piercing was administered by a licensed parlor in Ohio,
Kentucky, or Indiana you CAN donate blood without a waiting period
(provided the tattoo is healed). For a complete listing of acceptable states,
please visit www.hoxworth.org.
Hoxworth laboratory technicians will manufacture your whole blood unit
into three basic components: red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Your
blood will also go through multiple tests to provide the safest possible blood
for transfusion to patients in our community. Remember, your donation will
save up to three lives!

Eligibility
Be Prepared!
Make sure you drink plenty of extra fluids and eat a hearty meal
within four hours prior to your donation.
Get Out of Class!
You will receive a blood drive appointment card prior to your
donation. This will serve as your hall pass and permission to leave
your classroom, so hang on to it. You will be dismissed at your
designated appointment time.
Ages 16-18 Eligibility Requirements for Whole Blood Donation
Height
4’10” 4’11” 5’0”
Don’t Forget! You will need to bring a photo ID with you to
the blood drive. It will need to include your photo and date of
birth. This could be a driver’s license or state ID card.
Let’s Begin!
You will complete the donor form and participate in a mini
physical, during which a Hoxworth staff member will check
your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. A drop of blood
will be taken from your finger to measure your hematocrit (the
percentage of red cells that make up your whole blood).
Roll Up Your Sleeve!
Now you will give a pint of blood. This part of the process takes
about ten minutes.
Replenish!
Relax – you’re finished. Enjoy plenty of juice and cookies – you
just saved up to three lives.
