Understanding Health Services:
Acronyms and other abbreviations
Welcome to the updated supplement of Acroynms first published by Dental Update in 2010. Acronyms are a part of life, but they can cause
confusion by too much simplification of the full text title to which they refer. The painstaking task of putting together this document has
been undertaken by Professor Crispian Scully and Daljit Gill. When Professor Scully suggested this, I envisaged a page or two, but it has
become a comprehensive reference text of immense value to all who read dental papers, write letters to patients, indeed, to all members of
the dental team. Great thanks are due to Crispian for all his work in putting together this excellent source of information.
We would also like to thank Denplan in granting Dental Update an educational grant for this project enabling Dental Update to
produce a fine separate supplement to the Journal of reference to all clinicians from all forms of Dentsitry
FJ Trevor Burke
This series attempts to document alphabetically, some of the acronyms and abbreviations used in dentistry and the health services, for
ready reference by busy members of the dental team. This is especially important for internationally qualified members of the team, who
often struggle with terminology. The meaning of acronyms can nowadays often be found from Internet search engines such as
www.google.com, but such searches may elicit confusing lists, not always relevant to health care.
Acronyms (from the Greek; across= extremity, and onyma = word) and initialisms are words formed from the initial letters
of a name, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words. Acronyms are in widespread use, usually to abbreviate names of
organisations, or frequently used terms (Wikipedia). Why else these abbreviations should be used appears to be for convenience, laziness
or more dubious reasons such as to convey superiority15 but they are certainly widely used in dentistry17 and health care in general.
The use of acronyms however, can be irritating, in dentistry9 as elsewhere (refs) and, more seriously, they can also be the source
of significant confusion. For example, BDA can imply British Dental Association or British Diabetic Association, and the acronym NHS has
67 meanings (http://www.acronymfinder.com/Military-and-Government/NHS.html)!

DEPPA
– the online
patient oral health risk
assessment system
Volume 2
A first for you
DEPPA is an evidence-based assessment of your patients’ health
and risk of future disease, encouraging them to follow your care advice and
recommended treatment.
A first for your patients
DEPPA produces a personalised and straightforward assessment enabling you and your
team to take an active role in advising and reassuring patients.
It’s time to embrace change. And a real change for the better.
The Denplan Excel PreViser Patient Assessment (DEPPA) system is now up
and running in the UK and revolutionising patient care, risk assessment and
capitation fee guidance. As the General Dental Council places an obligation
on dentists to treat all patients holistically and preventively, DEPPA signals
the way forward for dental practices.
Access to DEPPA is FREE to Denplan Member dentists if you apply or
upgrade to the new Denplan Excel programme – the only quality assurance
programme independently verified and recognised by the British Dental
Health Foundation.
“I’m sure DEPPA
is going to
increase revenue
at the practice”.
Dr S A Clavell-Bate
Featuring an easy to follow ‘traffic light’ system of oral health and risk assessment,
your patients will be able to clearly see if they are at risk of gum disease, tooth decay, tooth
wear or mouth cancer. The DEPPA reports are generated online instantly, can be printed
and given to each patient, securely emailed and also saved to your records. All you need is
online access and a computer or an iPad.
Results have shown that DEPPA is encouraging patients to play an active role in improving
their oral health and that they are understanding and engaging more with their dentist. It’s
a wellness approach to patient management that can also inform capitation fee-banding
recommendations for individual patients. Leading to potentially better treatment take up by
patients through improved risk assessment insight.
In short, DEPPA is a comprehensive online reporting process, serving as a
valuable patient communication aid with personalised bio-feedback which
is well received by patients and that also reinforces your reputation as a
high quality, contemporary preventive practice.
Dr M Colwell
You also benefit from enhanced compliance with standard Clinical
Governance and your involvement in the Denplan Excel advanced
accreditation programme helps you meet or exceed Healthcare
Regulators’ requirements.
