Day 1 Work with Exponents
Power: An expression in the form an is called a POWER. A power has a base and an exponent and it represents repeated multiplication of a number. Learning Goals
Today, we will learn...
• The definitions of a power, base, and exponent
• How write powers in exponential and expanded form
• How to evaluate powers
We read this as "two to the fourth" NOT two to the power of 4. Sep 2110:01 AM

Evaluate each with a calculator.
a) 53 =
b) 26 = d) 52 + 32 =
e) (5 + 3)2 =
Write each product in expanded form as a power: c) (2)6 =
a) 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8
b) (10) x (10) x 9 x 9 x 9

Example 4
a) (1)2 = b) (1)3 =
c)(1)4 =
d) (1)5 =
Write each as a power with the given base.
a) 125 base 5
b) 81 base 3
c) 1000 base 10
NOTE: When a negative integer is enclosed in brackets, if a) the exponent is odd your answer will be negative
b) the exponent is even your answer will be positive

Key Points
• Powers are a useful way to express repeated multiplication.
• Powers sometimes appear in formulas. When evaluating expressions involving powers, follow the correct order of operations.
• A power consists of a base and an exponent where the base is the identical factor and the exponent tells how many factors there are.
• When there is a negative sign in front of a power, the sign stays put. It does not get multiplied by the exponent. Mar 238:20 AM
