BELIEFS
Qin Shihuangdi believed that if he could
not live forever he could still rule in the
after-life once he died. Therefore he
had thousands of terracotta statues
made to make up an army that would
protect him in the after-life. He also
had statues of officials, musicians
and acrobats buried with him so
they could serve and entertain him
in the spirit world.
ARTEFACTS
The terracotta warriors were discovered
in 1974, surrounding the Qin
Shihuangdi’s tomb. The figures have
solid legs and hollow bodies, each
with different combinations of facial
features, facial hair, and headgear,
which make them unique. There
is evidence that shows they were
brightly painted at the time. Some
of the figures have recently been
exhibited in London.
