A perennial herb with short thickened rootstocks; stems stout, erect, 30 cm long
or more, usually with rotten black sheath-fibers at base. Leaves sessile, linearlanceolate,
entire, somewhat clasping at base, 12-20 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, chartaceous,
many-nerved, the nerves elevated beneath, smooth. Flowers small, numerous, dark
purple, rarely white, terminal, paniculate; pedicels densely woolly, 1-1.5 cm long; bracts
glabrous, triangular-lanceolate, longer than the pedicel, 0.5-1.5 cm long;
perianth-segments 6, in 2 series, oblanceolate, smooth, 1-1.5 cm long, 2-3 mm wide,
somewhat cuneate at base; stamens 6, the filaments slender, the anthers reniform, do
rsifixed ; ovary elliptic, superior, the style 3-fid. Capsules 2 cm long, septicidal; seeds
many, about 8 mm long with wing.
Endemic, usually on grasslands or in open dry places at high altitudes in the
central range of the island.
