Unit 1 – Lesson 1 – Glossary: Plant Disease
Abiotic disease – a non-living disease which may be caused by an environmental
factor, it cannot be spread from plant to plant.
Bacteria - single celled micro-organisms that multiply by division. It is also classified
as a pathogen.
Biotic disease - an impairment of an organism's essential functions due to
continuous association with a pathogen
Blight - General and extremely rapid browning & death of various plant tissues
Cryphonectria parasitica – fungal pathogen
Fungus - parasites which vary in size and look from slime mold to mushroom
Integrated pest management - is an ecological and holistic approach to disease
management and encompasses insects, weeds, and diseases
Nematodes - microscopic worm-like animals that live saprophytically in water, soil, or
as parasites on plants
Mold – a type of fungus
Phytophthora infestans – fungal like organism also known as “water mold”
Pathogen - an organism capable of causing disease
Parasites - an organism obtaining food by living on or in another organism, the host
Phytoplasma - very small organisms characterized by their lack of a cell wall, a
pleiomorphic or filamentous shape, normally with a diameter less than 1 micrometer,
with very small genomes
Plant pathology - study of diagnosing and managing plant diseases
Plant disease – plant infection
Plant disease triangle - The interaction of pathogen, host, and environment causes
disease to occur
Signs - the pathogen or its parts or products are seen on a host plant
Symptoms - the external and internal reactions or alterations of a plant as a result of
a disease.
Virus - Very small particle that consists of genetic material encased in a protein
capsule which can reproduce only within a LIVING organism
