Unit 1 – Lesson 1 – Glossary: Plant Disease Abiotic disease – a non-living disease which may be caused by an environmental factor, it cannot be spread from plant to plant. Bacteria - single celled micro-organisms that multiply by division. It is also classified as a pathogen. Biotic disease - an impairment of an organism's essential functions due to continuous association with a pathogen Blight - General and extremely rapid browning & death of various plant tissues Cryphonectria parasitica – fungal pathogen Fungus - parasites which vary in size and look from slime mold to mushroom Integrated pest management - is an ecological and holistic approach to disease management and encompasses insects, weeds, and diseases Nematodes - microscopic worm-like animals that live saprophytically in water, soil, or as parasites on plants Mold – a type of fungus Phytophthora infestans – fungal like organism also known as “water mold” Pathogen - an organism capable of causing disease Parasites - an organism obtaining food by living on or in another organism, the host Phytoplasma - very small organisms characterized by their lack of a cell wall, a pleiomorphic or filamentous shape, normally with a diameter less than 1 micrometer, with very small genomes Plant pathology - study of diagnosing and managing plant diseases Plant disease – plant infection Plant disease triangle - The interaction of pathogen, host, and environment causes disease to occur Signs - the pathogen or its parts or products are seen on a host plant Symptoms - the external and internal reactions or alterations of a plant as a result of a disease. Virus - Very small particle that consists of genetic material encased in a protein capsule which can reproduce only within a LIVING organism
