OBJECTIVES FOR ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM
1. Know the definition of an electric field, and understand the difference between electric
field and electric force.
2. Know the similarities and differences between a gravitational, electric, and magnetic
field.
3. Explain the electric field inside a conductor. (A Faraday Cage.)
4. Understand the meaning and the use of electric field lines.
5. Define electric potential difference. Describe the relationship among energy, potential
difference and charge.
6. Understand how are gravitational potential energy and electric potential energy
similar.
7. Know the SI units of the many terms in this chapter. Which are vectors and which are
scalars?
8. Define and explain the meaning of electric current.
9. Recognize the factors that determine the resistance of a conductor.
10. Describe the characteristics of resistors in series and in parallel.
11. Define the magnetic field and explain its direction.
12. Sketch the magnetic field associated with a bar magnet, a straight current carrying
wire, a magnetic dipole.
13. Know the right hand rules for the direction of magnetic force and for magnetic field.
14. Calculate the force on a current carrying wore.
