Science
10-11-06
• Any substance on the periodic table
o Ex. Hydrogen(H), Aluminum(Al), gold(Au)
• Smallest form: atom
• Formed when two or more atoms become chemically
bonded
o Ex. Carbon Dioxide(CO2), Water(H2O)
• Smallest form: molecule
The Four types of compounds in cells
• Carbohydrates
o Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
o C 6 H 12 O 6
o Glucose
o Usually end in “ose”.
o Organisms use Carbohydrates for energy
• Lipids and Fats
o Carbon, Hydrogen, and oxygen
o Used for cushioning and insulation
• Proteins
o Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen
o Enzymes
o Hair and Fingernails
o Antigens and antibodies
o Made from amino acids
• Nucleic Acids
o DNA
o RNA
o DNA is found in the nucleus and determines
many of our genetic traits.
o RNA is in the nucleus and cytoplasm. It is used
for making proteins.
o Made of phosphate, sugars (ribose/deoxyribose),
and ATCG or AUCG.
There are elements. Cells use 4 basic compounds. Compounds
are elements put together. Cells use Carbohydrates, lipids/fats,
proteins, and nucleic acids. There is DNA and RNA.
