Why not let your creative imagination run wild by creating your own miniature garden – on a plate!
Once you have laid the foundations you can create a green space of your very own. Copy your own
garden, allotment or park area, or get creative with an imaginary garden. All you need to get started
is one dinner plate, sand and potting compost.
What you will definitely need:
Large Dinner Plate
Sand
Potting Compost
Other things you could use:
Twigs
Modelling Clay
Seeds
Silver foil
Moss
Paper
Gravel
Flowers
Leaves
Stones/Pebbles
Step one: Take one clean dinner plate and place a 1 cm layer of sand on top.
Step two: Spread over potting compost so that the sand is completely covered.
Now get to work creating your very own garden!
Some Ideas to get you started:
 Use moss for hedges or twigs tied with cotton as a fence.
 Gravel (or sand) make good paths with larger stones as boulders or rockeries.
 Fill up your flower beds with leaves, petals and dried flowers taken from your garden or any
other green space. (However, it is illegal to pick wild flowers and probably not a good idea to
pick flowers from the park, either!)
 Two twigs planted upright with string between looks great as a washing line. Cut out paper
clothes to hang from the line!
 Scatter some mustard and cress seeds, water and watch as your plate garden grows. You can
try including some Nasturtium seeds and watch as the plant grows and takes over your
garden like an alien species!
 You can also grow carrot tops to add to your garden for an exotic touch. Slice the top off a
carrot about 2 cm deep, cut off any green shoots and place in a saucer of water. Place the
saucer on a sunny window ledge and keep topping up the water. Once the green tops have
started growing you can then add them to your garden, as trees or ferns.
 Why not make a little vegetable plot (or turn the garden into an allotment!). You can use
modelling clay to make realistic miniature vegetables and fruit.
 An oblong of silver foil circled with stones and plants would be an effective pond. You could
add a mini gnome made from the modelling clay or even a heron standing by the side if you
are feeling very creative.
