COLD
Cold air moves in to an area with a warm air mass. The warm air mass rises quickly and water vapor
condenses.

Cumulonimbus clouds form from the rising warm air causing heavy, sometimes severe rain.
Once the front moves through there will be clear, cooler weather.

WARM
How it forms w. diagram
Warm air moves into an area with a cold air mass. The warm air pushes the cold air, but rises above it
for some distance. As the warm air rises it condenses.

Cirrus clouds form at the very top front edge of the frontal boundary. Stratus clouds of many types form
along the frontal boundary bringing gentle, prolonged rain.
Once the front moves through there will be clear, warmer weather.

STATIONARY

When a warm air mass and a cold air mass meet, but neither have enough energy to move a stationary
front forms…Stand still.

Clouds and fog form at the front that can bring rain or snow and fog. Until the air masses move there
could be days of clouds and precipitation

OCCLUDED
“cut off”
A warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses. The coldest air mass pushes the warm air mass
up and moves forward to meet the other cold air mass. The water vapor in the rising warm air will
condense creating clouds.

Can bring strong winds, and heavy precipitation as either rain or snow.
