Poised for the Future • We are creating new platforms of service and intend to grow, evolve and further diversify in a manner that will positively impact the community and the blood supply. • OneBlood is an innovator of technology and is the first center in the country to create state-of-theart simulated training centers, giving employees hands-on learning before going out in the field. • We created a custom-made, one-of-a-kind regulated software platform called RSA (Regulated Software Application) that makes collecting, processing and tracking the blood supply more efficient and transparent. It also streamlines the donation process creating a faster and better donor experience. As the landscape of our industry continues to shift, OneBlood remains at the forefront of creating a new template for delivering safe, available and affordable blood to our hospital partners and their patients. We will not wait for change to impact our operations, we are leading the change and setting the course for the future. As a trusted community asset and stewards of the blood supply, it is our responsibility to be innovators who forge new ground and break the boundaries of what was once considered traditional blood banking. Our progressive and forward-thinking strategy has strengthened the blood supply and mitigated costs to our hospital partners and their patients. That’s what a community asset does. Patient’s lives depend on the work that we do and for that very reason we remain focused on the safety of the blood supply and always ensuring the right unit of blood is available when and where it is needed. W - MKT-BR-ABOUT • As a community asset, we have taken the lead in showing hospitals how they can actually use less of our product by encouraging better blood management practices. • Blood management is a win, win. It helps improve patient outcomes, allows hospitals to control their costs because they don’t need as much blood and in-turn helps prevent blood shortages. • The OneBlood Target Your Type initiative was designed to empower and teach donors that they play an important role in how the blood supply is managed. • Target Your Type is showing donors how to give the most needed components of their blood by choosing the best donation method for their blood type. • The Target Your Type approach greatly strengthens the blood supply and helps ensure the right type, at the right time is available for the right patient, precisely when they need it. Our Journey PROGRESSIVE Blood Management OneBlood is a not-for-profit, community asset responsible for providing safe, available and affordable blood to our hospital partners and their patients. AVAILABLE SAFE • Safety of the blood supply is top priority. • OneBlood is heavily regulated and mandated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). • Required to follow all FDA rules and subject to FDA inspections to ensure complete compliance. • Constant vigilance of all aspects of our operations by the OneBlood Quality and Regulatory Division ensures strong regulatory compliance and safety of the blood supply. • Every unit of blood undergoes more than a dozen tests at our state-of-the-art testing facility to ensure patient safety. Low Iron Some donors, especially women, struggle with a lack of iron – or low hemoglobin in their bodies. Iron is needed for your body to produce hemoglobin. This is important because the hemoglobin in your red blood cells carries the oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. If your body does not have enough iron, you may develop iron deficiency anemia. Having iron deficiency results in fewer red blood cells being produced by your body and less oxygen is transported from your lungs, making you feel tired. Your hemoglobin level plays a role in your ability to give blood and must be at a certain level to donate. We will check your hemoglobin levels and if the count is too low you will not be able to donate that day. The good news is that low iron is usually a temporary condition and can often be improved simply by eating more iron rich foods. If this does not help, you can also consult with your physician about taking an iron supplement. Meat is one of the best sources of iron. Dried beans, fortified cereals and breads as well as dark leafy vegetables are also good sources of iron. Dried fruits, nuts and seeds make healthy snacks and can also help improve iron levels. See reverse for detailed list of iron rich foods. Iron Rich Foods On average, a woman needs 18 mg iron a day and a man needs 10 mg. See the table below for a basic reference for iron rich foods: AVG. Many Hispanics have type O blood, the blood type in highest demand, so it’s important to know that as a Hispanic blood donor, you make a powerful contribution to patients in need. Since genetically similar blood is preferred for people needing repeat transfusions, Hispanic blood donors are more likely to be a match for other Hispanic patients in need of blood transfusions. Adding more donors from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds increases the likelihood that all patients will find the match they need. This is also true for the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be The Match Registry. Visit www.oneblood.org to find the nearest donor center location or the Big Red Bus. The Need Is Real Watch Maria’s story and many others at: www.oneblood.org/hispanic Maria’s Story Maria Ruibal’s life revolved around children. She had a son and was devastated when doctors told her she would not be able to conceive again. More than a decade later she learned she was pregnant, but her joy nearly turned to tragedy during delivery complications. She underwent three surgeries and 17 blood transfusions and then lapsed into a coma. Miraculously, Maria came out of the coma two weeks later and finally was able to hold her newborn son, Christopher, for the first time. She encourages everyone to give blood to help give someone else a second chance.
