Lesson: 1.1 What Is Magnetism? (P. 6)
A Magnet
Attracts iron and materials
containing iron
attracts or repels other
magnets
one part will always point North
when allowed to swing freely
The attraction or repulsion of magnetic materials is called magnetism.
Magnetic Poles
Any magnet has two ends, or two magnetic poles; north and south poles.
Magnetic Interactions
Like poles of a magnet repel each other, while unlike poles attract each other.
Magnetic Force
The attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles is magnetic force.
Magnetic Fields
The magnetic field is the area of magnetic force around a magnet. A magnetic force is strongest
at the poles of a magnet.
Why magnets can interact without touching?
Because of the magnetic field.
Magnetic field lines are invisible lines that map out the magnetic field around a magnet.
What is the direction of the magnetic field lines?
From North Pole to South Pole.
The closer the lines of a magnetic field, the stronger the
magnetic field.
Where will the lines of magnetic field be closest?
At the poles.
Can you see a magnetic field?
No, but we can see its effect.
