Histotechnology
Dental Hygiene
Cytotechnologists are highly skilled
laboratory professionals who analyze
cellular specimens with a microscope to
diagnose cancer and other diseases.
These cancer detectives are trained to
recognize morphologic changes and
abnormalities in cell structure. The
program also integrates training and
certification for histotechnology.
Histotechnologists prepare human or
animal tissue for microscopic evaluation
by pathologists to diagnose diseases such
as cancer. They also prepare tissue for
teaching and medical research.

Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene:
Dental hygienists are oral health professionals
who work with people of all ages in helping
prevent and treat dental disease. Dental
hygienists, working with dentists, carefully

therapeutic services.

Master of Dental Hygiene is a 33 hour post

Entry-level Masters: The entry-level MHIIM
prepares professionals who ensure that patient
health information is complete, accurate and
private. The HIIM professional is responsible
for acquiring, analyzing and protecting
electronic health information which is vital to
providing quality patient care. This profession
connects the clinical, business and technology
aspects of healthcare. Job titles include
director, manager, quality improvement
director, clinical data analyst, privacy officer,
and clinical documentation specialist.

Postgraduate Master’s: The postgraduate
MHIIM prepares graduates from a variety of
healthcare professions for leadership roles in a
range of employment settings. These roles are
associated with enterprise-wide information
systems strategic planning, management and
health data administration. Students also
develop skills for project management, data
management and data integrity.

Medical technologists are diagnostic
detectives who use a variety of

The Advanced Practice Track is a career entry
level program for students with a B.S. degree in
biology or chemistry who desire to enter a career
in the clinical laboratory. The program provides
the necessary educational experiences for the
student to qualify for national certification as a
medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist
and to apply for a Tennessee license to practice
as a clinical laboratory professional. In addition
to their B.S. degree requirements, qualified
students must have successfully completed, with
a “C” or better, the specific courses required for
medical technology as listed above.

Speech-language pathologists provide
services to individuals and families that
include the prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment of speech, language,
swallowing, and cognitive disorders, as
well as communication impairments
secondary to hearing loss, autism and
other develop-mental disabilities. A

required for American Speech-Language
and Hearing Association (ASHA)

Audiology
Audiologists provide services to
individuals and families that include the
prevention, identification, assessment,
and management of hearing and balance
disorders. Audiologists provide aural
rehabilitation to children and adults
across the entire age span and select, fit,
and dispense amplification systems such
as hearing aids and other listening
devices. A clinical doctoral degree
(Doctor of Audiology or Au.D.) is the
minimum degree required for American
Speech-Language and Hearing
Association (ASHA) professional
certification.

Physician
Assistant*
PAs perform physical examinations,
diagnose and treat illnesses, order
and interpret lab tests, perform
clinical procedures, assist in surgery,
provide patient education and
counseling and make rounds in
hospitals and nursing homes. All 50
states and the District of Columbia
allow PAs to practice and prescribe
medications.
Because PAs are trained and
educated in a medical model similar
to physicians; they share similar
diagnostic and therapeutic reasoning
skills. This relationship within the
Physician-PA practice is often
described as delegated autonomy;
where Physicians delegate medical
duties to PAs. Within this range of
duties, PAs use autonomous
decision-making for their patient
care. This team model is an efficient
way to provide high-quality medical
care. In rural areas, PAs may be the
only healthcare providers on-site,
collaborating
with
physicians
elsewhere
through
telecommunication.

from the Accreditation Review Commission
on Education for the Physician Assistant
(ARC-PA). The University of Tennessee
Health Science Center Physician Assistant
Program anticipates matriculating its first
class in January of 2014, pending ARC-PA
provisional accreditation in September of
2013.
Provisional accreditation is an accreditation
status for a new PA program that has not
yet enrolled students, but at the time of its
comprehensive accreditation review, has
demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a
program in accordance with the
accreditation Standards. Matriculation of
students into the program is contingent
upon achieving approval and accreditation
with these bodies.
