Legatum Prosperity Index 2016 Guyana Ranked 80th of 149 on the 2016 Legatum Prosperity Index™ OVERVIEW Despite having relatively strong social capital, Guyana is held back by an economy too vulnerable to volatile commodity prices and a weak business environment. Since 2007, Guyana has not managed to improve much in its Economic Quality and Business Environment sub-indices, which remains among the country’s weakest performances. Education and Health are also below both regional and world averages: in these two subindices the biggest concerns are the quasi-absence of tertiary education and the region’s highest mortality rate, respectively. However, with policy reform in these areas, building on the strong social capital and notable improvements in the Governance sub-index, could see prosperity rise strongly in Guyana. Legatum Prosperity Index 2016 www.prosperity.com Sub-Index Rankings In the Prosperity Sub-Index rankings, Guyana performs best on Social Capital and Governance and scores lowest on the Business Environment sub-index. PROSPERITY GAP The ‘Prosperity Gap’ takes a country's GDP and uses it as the yardstick to measure a nation's expected Prosperity Index ranking. Guyana is an upper-middle income country that is delivering prosperity as expected given its wealth. Yet, it does not perform equally across the Index: for example, it has a significant deficit in its Business Environment sub-index, but a substantial surplus in Social Capital.
