7.5 Apply the Tangent Rao
Objecve:
1. You will be able to use the tangent rao for indirect measurement. What is trigonometry?
Trigonometry is the study of the relaonships between the sides & the angles of Δ.
Angle of Perspecve
: the angle from which you are looking
Angles of Elevation
An angle of elevation is the angle between the line of sight and the horizontal when an observer looks upward.
Angles of Depression
An angle of depression is the angle between the line of sight when an observer looks downward, and the horizontal.
Why is the angle of depression the same as the angle of elevation?

Tangent Rao :
Example 1:
Solve for x.
Example 2:
A building is 50 feet high. At a distance away from the building, an observer noces that the angle of elevaon to the top of the building is 41 °. How far is the observer from the base of the building?

6) tan 41 = 12/x
x = 12 tan 41
x ≈ 13.8
20) tan 65 = x/9
x = 9 tan 65
x ≈ 19.3
24) tan 44 = x/29
x = 29 tan44
x ≈ 28
a2 + b2 = c2
292 + 282 = c2
1625 = c2
c ≈ 40.3
7) tan 27 = x/15
x = 15 tan 27
x ≈ 7.6
8) tan 58 = 22/x
x = 22 tan58
x ≈ 13.7
21) tan 38 = 11/x
x = 11 tan38
x ≈ 14.1
A=1/2bh
A= A b≈14.1 h= 11
A≈1/2(14.1)(11)
A≈77.6 un2
18) tan 25 = 8/x
x = 8 tan25
x ≈ 17.2
22) tan 55 = 16/x
x = 16 tan55
x ≈ 11.2
A=1/2bh
A= A b≈11.2 h= 16
A≈1/2(11.2)(16)
A≈89.6 un2
27) y = 60
28) y = 75
tan 42 = z/60
z = 60 tan42
z ≈ 54.0
tan 40 = 75/z
z = 75 tan40
z ≈ 89.4
19) tan 40 = 13/x
x = 13 tan40
x ≈ 15.5
23) tan 22 = 7/x
x = 7 tan22
x ≈ 17.3
