Starfish Killing Robots for Ecosystem Preservation The COTSbot targeting a Crown of Thorns Starfish. The math is overwhelming for divers protecting the Great Barrier Reef. The Crown of Thorns Starfish (COTS), always hungry for coral, can produce up to 65 million eggs. Eliminating them is a job that’s too much for any human workforce. Furnished with cameras, five thrusters, and a GPS tracking device, the COTSbot is here to lend a helping hand. The machine can run for eight hours without interruptions and can eliminate 200 starfish in one session. Once the COTSbot identifies the targeted species, it injects it with a solution of poisonous cattle bile. Divers check the ocean floor to make sure that the job is complete, and they finish off any survivors. The bot’s recognition system helps the robot distinguish COTS from other marine life. If unsure, the robot will take an image for the marine team to review. Make the COTSbot an addition to your team! Customers are welcome to try the robot for 30 days. If you aren’t satisfied with it, you can return the product and receive your money back. Image from Queensland University of Technology
