Unlocking an iPhone 4/ 4s or 5
iPhone 5
iPhone 4/4S
What is this?
This is the guide on how to unlock your iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 which takes place during the
restoring of the OS software. As with the upgrade from Optus to Telstra, some phones will
need to be unlocked to allow you to access the Telstra network. You will NOT be able to
make calls or send texts until you complete this for your phone once your number has been
moved over to Telstra.
What is in this guide?
This guide contains the unlocking process which has been broken down into two methods
“Through iTunes” which will require a computer and will also update your iPhone to the
latest software, or “Through iCloud” which requires your iPhone to be on iOS 5 or higher
and is done all on the iPhone but will require WIFI. You will only need to follow one of these
guides which have been broken down into the following parts:
Through iTunes (p 2)
PART A: Backing up your iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 (p 2-3)
PART B: Restoring OS Software to iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 (p 4)
PART C: Restoring your personal content to iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 (p 5)
OR
Through iCloud (p 6)
PART A: Backing up your iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 (p 7)
PART B: Restoring OS Software to iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 (p 8)
PART C: Restoring your personal content to iPhone 4/ 4S or 5 (p 9)

Through iTunes
Going through this guide will also update your phone to the latest version of iOS 7. This is
unavoidable through this process. If you wish to remain on your current software you will
need to follow the iCloud guide, provided that iCloud is available with that particular
software.
PART A: Backing up your iPhone 4/4S or 5
1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (click the link below to download
the latest version for your computer) estimated time 5-10 minutes if updating is
required
A. Windows: http://www.apple.com/au/itunes/download/ (See Fig. 1A)
B. Mac: Run “Software Updates” from the Apple Menu in the top left corner
(see Fig. 1B)
Fig. 1A
Fig. 1B
2. Once you are certain you have the latest version of iTunes you will need to connect
your phone via cable to the computer and then select the iPhone in iTunes.
Depending on how you have configured iTunes, your phone will either appear in the
top right corner (Fig. 2A) or in the middle of the bar on the left (Fig. 2B).

Fig. 2B
3. By default you should be in the “Summary” tab at the top. If you are not, simply left
click on “Summary”. This will bring you to a window which shows the basic
information about your iPhone. In the middle of the window there will be a button
that says “Back Up Now”. Clicking this will begin the backup process on this
computer. You may get a prompt asking if you would like to transfer purchases. This
will transfer any items purchased through the iTunes store on your phone. Any music
that you have transferred from another computer that has not been purchased on
an iTunes account will need to be synced across manually afterwards as iTunes will
not back it up this due to copyright infringement risks. (Depending on how much
content there is to backup this can take from 5 minutes to 2 hours in the very
extreme)
4. You will know that the backup has completed when the bar at the top/ centre of
iTunes is blank and just below the button where you clicked “Back Up Now” there
will be a time saying the last time a successful backup was completed and that time
should be approximately when the backup was started/finished depending on how
much content you have to backup
3
PART B: Restoring OS Software to iPhone 4/ 4S or 5
1. With the phone selected again in iTunes, in the summary tab there will be the option
to “restore iPhone”. Click this option to remove the current software, including all
settings and content and restore it with a fresh version of the most up to date
software for the phone. (This will take 10-15 min as it will need to download the
latest iPhone software)
4
PART C: Restoring your personal content to iPhone 4/ 4S or 5
1. Connect iPhone to computer where the backup was completed
2. Because all the content has been wiped from the phone, iTunes should automatically
prompt you to restore from a backup and provide a drop down menu where you
should select the time and date for the backup you would like to restore
3. If iTunes does not give you this automatic prompt then you should see the iPhone in
iTunes once again like you did in Step 2 of “BACKING UP TO ITUNES”. In the middle
of the screen next to “Back Up Now” will be another button “Restore Backup…”.
Click this and a box will appear with all the backups. Select the appropriate backup
and click “restore”. (Depending on how much content there is to restore this can
take 10min -2 hours in the very extreme)
Things to know when restoring from iTunes backup:
1. Restoring from backup will initially load settings and basic content such as email and
phone settings as well as things such as contacts, messages, notes and additionally
the specific information within apps. This restoration process does not, however,
restore the apps themselves
2. After the initial restore is complete the phone will automatically do a sync with the
computer and will at this stage restore things like apps (provided you have chosen to
“transfer purchases” during the backup stage) photos, music, movies and TV shows.
3. If the computer you are doing this from is NOT the usual computer you sync your
iPhone with, content that has NOT been purchased through iTunes will not be put
back on and you will need to do a further sync from that original computer.
5
Through iCloud
You will need to have an updated iPhone to gain access to iCloud. If you do not have iCloud
you will need to follow the “Through iTunes” guide. You will also need WIFI throughout all
these steps. You will also need to know your iCloud account and password, the account you
can find at the top of the iCloud menu and the password would be the one you use to
purchase apps with.
