Chapter 39: The Genetic Code
1. Why does the genetic code consist of a sequence of 3 nucleotides
rather than 2 or 4 nucleotides?
2. Can you write the START and STOP codons?
3. What is meant by the statement that the code is non-overlapping?
4. What is meant by the statement that the code is degenerate?\
5. What is meant by the statement that the code has no punctuation?
6. What is meant by the statement that the code has directionality?
7. If you are given a codon; e.g. p---UUC---OH, can you write
the anticodon showing which base is in the “wobble” position? Can
you label the variable base in the codon? Can you write the DNA
sequence for the above codon and label the template and coding
strands?
8. What are the common features of all tRNA molecules?
9. Is the genetic code universal? Why or why not?
10. Where is the amino acid attached on the tRNA? What enzyme
catalyzes this reaction? What is the minimum number of such
enzymes? How is this reaction coupled to the hydrolysis of ATP?
11. What determines the specific of an aminoacyl-tRNA
synthetase?
12. How does the proofreading activity of the aminoacyl-tRNA
synthetase work?
13. Know terms at the end of the chapter.
