Smooth Muscle:
Function- Controls slow, involuntary movements such as the
contraction of the muscle tissues in the walls of the intestines.
Description- Contracts without conscious control, having the form of
thin layers or sheets made up of spindle-shaped, unstriated cells with
single nuclei
Skeletal Muscle:
Function- Produce skeletal movement
Maintain posture and body position
Support soft tissue
Guards entrances and exits
Maintains body temperature
Stores nutrient reserves
Description- Voluntary muscle made up of elongated, multinucleated,
transversely striated muscle fibers, usually having body attachments
Cardiac Muscle:
Function- Plays most important role in the contraction of the atria and
ventricles of the heart. Causes rhythmical beating of the heart,
circulating the blood and its contents throughout the body.
Description- Extremely specialized form of muscle tissue only found in
the heart and makes up the bulk of the heart’s mass. Involuntary,
striated elongated muscle fibers.
