government and economic systems. The students will develop and understanding of:

Religion and Values/Beliefs: Religion often influences a civilization’s values and beliefs.
Religion and Social Structure: Religion can be influence the development of social
hierarchies.
Religion and Government: Religion can impact a government.
Religion and Empires: Connections between empires can lead to the rise and spread of
religion. Religion can contribute to the rise/decline of Empires.*
* If you choose to teach Unit 4 (Religions) prior to Unit 3 (Empires), focus on the rise of empires for
this portion of the unit. If you choose to teach the units in order, focus on the decline of empires for
this portion of the unit.

Key Vocabulary LO: SWBAT define and explain the terms belief, practices and rituals.

Language Functions LO: SWBAT explain how religions can influence the beliefs and
practices of certain groups.

Language Skills LO: SWBAT read a passage about the practices of one religion and create
an informational brochure about the religion. (Reading passages should be chosen/modified in
accordance with the LEP students’ zone of proximal development).

Grammar and Language LO: SWBAT use comparatives in writing assignments (more than,
less than, greater, shorter, longer, etc.) by comparing two of the religious groups.

Lesson Tasks LO: SWBAT read and summarize a passage about a religious group and
explain this summary to a group.

Language Learning Strategy LO: SWBAT develop a Venn diagram analyzing the
similarities and differences of two religious practices. (The linguistic load will vary from LEP
student to LEP student. Level 1-2 LEP students may need a word bank or other supplement to
complete this activity using this strategy).
