About the Composer
Matthew Culloton (b. 1976) is a graduate of Concordia College,
where he sang in the Concordia Choir under Rene Clausen. He
has undertaken additional conducting studies with Paul Nesheim,
Bruce Houglum, and Dale Warland, and has served as a member
of The Dale Warland Singers.
Matthew serves as Artistic Director and Conductor for The
Singers – Minnesota Choral Artists, a forty-voice choir based in
the Twin Cities. He is also the Director of Choral Activities at
Hopkins High School, for which he received the 2003
VocalEssence/ACDA of Minnesota Creative Programming
Award. He has served as the Minnesota ACDA Male Choirs Repertoire and Standards
Chair since 1999. As a composer, Matthew’s commissions have included works for The
Dale Warland Singers, Chanson, and the Minnesota All-State Choirs.
Golden Slumbers
Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise,
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry,
and I will sing you a lullaby.
Care you know not, therefore sleep,
While I o’er you watch do keep,
Sleep, pretty darling do not cry,
and I will sing a lullaby.

Performance Considerations:
- Oboe or violin may be substituted for flute if necessary, but flute is the preferred
instrument. Note that the obbligato instrument alone plays the melody starting
in m. 44, for what would be the third verse.
- Observe a legato articulation throughout.
- Text stress and syllabic stress will help make this supple text more meaningful to
the listener.
- Starting with the very end of the first verse, the arrangement oscillates between 2and 3-part voicing. Though it is not necessary, a more balanced sound may be
achieved by dividing the singers evenly among all sounding notes. Similarly, it is
recommended to use a 4-part division in mm. 52-58, with the two soprano parts
dividing on the top staff, and the alto parts singing the unison line together on
the bottom staff.
