CORRELATION BETWEEN LANDFORMS AND LAND USE ANALYSIS USING REMOTE SENSING AND GIS TECHNOLOGY OF SANTINIKETAN AND ITS ENVIRONS OF BIRBHUM DISTRICT, WEST BENGAL - A CASE STUDY ABSTRACT No part of the earth surface is free from the threats. It applies to the landforms also of the Study-Area which is the interfluve area between Kopai river and Ajoy river of Birbhum District in West Bengal. The study area which includes Santiniketan and its surroundings viz. Bolpur, Sriniketan,, Bhallabhpur and Shyambati, lies between 23°36' N to 23°45' N latitudes and 87°36' E to 87°51' E longitudes with total area coverage of 260.40 sq.km. The Tertiary and Pleistocene deposits are mostly covered by variable thickness of laterite while large areas of Sriniketan, Ballabhpur and Shyambati are covered by lateritic plateau. The paper attempts to identify types of landforms in the study area that provide basic source of information for landscape analysis and its application to area development. The landforms identification and land use analysis mainly done by the help of field survey and using Indian Remote Sensing Satellite imagery (IRS 1D LISS III). A systematic on-the-screen visual image interpretation approach is used to delineate the land use classes using ARC GIS software. Based on visual image interpretation techniques, the study area has been divided into built-up area, cultivated area, forest land, vegetational cover, barren land, water bodies and transport. Co-relation between landforms and land-use have been computed to find out the waste land and the land which is using for planning purpose such as – agricultural purpose, built up purposes etc. The correlation between landforms and land use has been computed by the help of graphs and pie charts. Thus, it is observed that the study area is having insufficient development because of the occurrence of large amount of barren land, i.e. 37.55 percent of the total area. The study area is characterized by less cultivated area, i.e.19.28 percent. Thus, the study area needs an immediate scientific treatment. INTRODUCTION No part of the earth surface is free from the threats. It applies to the STUDY AREA METHODOLOGY INPUT Collection of Spatial and Non-Spatial Data landforms also of the study-area. It is observed that the large area of the study-area is covered by landforms. Though, land use has become increasingly important for planning to overcome the problems of haphazard, uncontrolled development, deteriorating envi- TRANSFORMATION Georeferencing and Projection ronmental quality, loss of prime agricultural lands etc, therefore, in the present study-area, an attempt is made to find out the waste land and the land which is using for planning purpose. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS Mainly four types of landforms have been identified and categorized in the study area.
