CLOUD TYPES There are 3 main types of clouds: cumulus, stratus & cirrus. They can be categorized according to their shape & altitude above sea level. Cloud Formation: Warm moist air rises, cools and water vapor condenses on condensation nuclei. The air then stops rising when its temperature is equal to the atmospheric air. The cloud will flatten and wind will spread it horizontally. Altitude High altitude Middle altitude Name Composition Precipitation cirrus wispy, feathery ice crystals none cirrostratus thin, long, transparent, creates halo around sun or moon ice crystals none cirrocumulus thin, white, billowy -rare predicts snow or rain ice crystals none altocumulus wavy rows, layered, gray-white water very little altostratus gray, sheet-like, thin layers water rain or snow nimbostratus large, thick, dark, gray storm cloud ice & water steady &long rain or snow cumulonimbus dark, towering, storm cloud thunderheads ice & water heavy rain, hail, lightning stratus clouds that touch the ground. water drizzle fog Low altitude Description stratocumulus rippled, irregular layers, gray-white Associated with cold fronts water light rain, snow & drizzle stratus low, uniform gray sheets Cover large areas & block sun Can form from risen fog water drizzle cumulus white, puffy, cottony Fair weather cloud water none CLOUD TYPES There are 3 main types of clouds: They can be categorized according to : The air then stops rising when its temperature is equal to the atmospheric air.
