Cell Division -Asexual and Sexual
Mitosis and Meiosis
A Review
Cell Cycle = I PMAT C
Mitosis is.....
-asexual division of life into two identical “daughter cells”
-each new cell gets a double set of chromosomes. In
humans this is 46.
-A double set of chromosomes is referred to as diploid
(2n) (ie.2x's number of copies)
-mitosis creates new cells in your body and in diploid
organisms (all animals and some plants and stages of
plants)

Mitosis = PMAT – one division of the nucleus
creating an exact copy (clone)
Mitosis in Animals
I PMAT C – memory trick
• I = interphase – performing normal functions (ie
growth and preparation and DNA replication)
Mitosis:
−
−
−
−
P = prophase – doubled chromosomes become
visible
M = metaphase – chromosomes line up at equator
of cell
A = anaphase – chromosomes separate and move
to opposite poles of cell
T = telophase – nuclear envelope reforms and 2
new cells begin to form
• C = cytokinesis – cell cytoplasm divides in two

Meiosis = two
divisions of the
nucleus (meiosis I and
meiosis II)
- leads to genetic
variation
This results in half the
number of
chromosomes (n) which
is necessary for sexual
reproduction.
These cells are haploid
(n).
