How to choose the right light LIGHTING FACTS LABELS 101 LIGHTING FACTS LABELS DEFINED: Similar to the nutrition facts on food packages, lighting facts labels give you all of the important information that is needed to make the best lighting choice for your space. This is a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requirement that is found on every light bulb in any store. Find the lighting facts label on the back of the light bulbs packaging. DEPICTING A LIGHTING FACTS LABEL BRIGHTNESS Measured in lumens – this tells you how much light output you will get. (Remember, brightness is now measured in lumens, not watts!) The higher the number, the brighter the bulb. LIGHT APPERANCE Indicates the color temperature of the bulb. Color temperature is all about personal preference! For a warm (incandescent-like) glow, look for 2700K and for a brighter, bluer light that mimics the natural daylight outdoors – look for a 5000K bulb. Lighting Facts Per Bulb ESTIMATED YEARLY ENERGY COST 650 lumens Brightness Estimated Yearly Energy Cost $1.32 This tells you how much it will cost to light the bulb – typically averaged to be 11 cents per KWh (kilo-watt hour). Based on 3 hrs/day, 11¢/kWh Cost depends on rates and use Life Based on 3 hrs/day Light Appearance Warm LIFE 31.9 years Cool 2700 K Energy Used 11 watts How long the bulb will last (in years) and based on an average use of 3 hours operation per day. ENERGY USED How much energy the bulb consumes when turned on. ENERGY STAR Mimics natural daylight outdoors! 2700K Offers a warmer glow! 5000K When you see the ENERGY STAR® logo, that means a light bulb has passed additional performance and quality standards that make it stand above the rest. LIGHTING TIP: For ultimate energy savings, find the bulb with the lumens you need, then choose the one with the lowest wattage.
