1-5 The Distributive Property – Day 2
Combining Like Terms
Term – a number, a variable, or a product or quotient of numbers and variables
Like terms – terms which contain the same variables, with corresponding variables having
the same power.
i.e.) 4x and 12x, 18a2 and 3a2, x3y6 and -5x3y6
unlike terms – terms with different variables, or variables without the same exponents
i.e.) 6x and 3y, 10x and 2x2, 9x3y and 4x3yz2
Examples:
1. 6y + 3y = 9y
2. 3x + 7x + 3 = 3x + 7x + 3 = 10x + 3
3. 5a + 7b + 2a – 3b = 5a + 7b + 2a – 3b = 7a + 7b – 3b = 7a + 4b
4. 6x2 – 3x + 2x2 = 6x2 – 3x + 2x2 = 8x2 – 3x
Examples involving The Distributive Property:
5. 3(x + 2) + 4x = 3(x) + 3(2) + 4x = 3x + 6 + 4x = 7x + 6
6. 5(3x + 2y) – 7x – 3y = 5(3x) + 5(2y) – 7x – 3y = 15x + 10y – 7x – 3y = 8x + 7y
7. -2(x + 7) + 3y = -2(x) + -2(7) + 3y = -2x – 14 + 3y = simplified
8. 10 – 4(x + 2) = 10 + -4(x) + -4(2) = 10 – 4x – 8 = -4x + 2
