Lesson 7.2
Converse of Pythagorean
Theorem
Objective: To use the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem to determine if a triangle is a right triangle.
Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem:
If the square of the length of the longest side of a triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides, then the triangle is a right triangle.
Example: Tell whether a triangle with the given side lengths is a right triangle. 1) 4, 4√3, 8
2) 10, 11, 14
3) 5, 6, √61

Classifying a Triangle by Angles using side lengths:
c2 > a2 + b2 , triangle is obtuse
c2 < a2 + b2 , triangle is acute
c2 = a2 + b2 , triangle is right
Example: Is the triangle acute, obtuse, or right?
1) 3, 4, 6
2) 6, 14, 11
