However, safe storage and retrieval of these models is an uphill task for an orthodontist and their staff. Herein, we describe a simple method of safely securing this essential orthodontic diagnostic aid. Keywords: Study models, Velcro, Model Storage. INTRODUCTION Management of orthodontic records is of utmost importance to the clinician. The process of digitization has proved to be of great help in this regard.1 Plaster study models are still the most commonly available records, providing a three-dimensional view of the malocclusion. Study models are stored in model boxes and are retrieved periodically during and after the course of treatment. Due to their physical nature and frequent handling, they are prone to breakages. The introduction of plastic bases has greatly reduced the incidence of damage to the artistic part of the study model. However, breakages to the anatomic part of the study model are still a concern. A simple and economical method of securing the models with Velcro (hook and loop fastener) tape has been devised to minimize these episodes of damage during storage and transportation.2 Fig. 1: Velcro loop and hook tapes PROCEDURES 1. Cut 4" length Velcro hook tape (1" width) and 2" Velcro loop tape in accordance with the plastic base of the study models (Fig. 1). 2. Paste Velcro hook tape on the inside surface of the base of storage box with cyanoacrylate adhesive (Fig. 2). 1 Professor, 2,5Senior Lecturer, 3,4Reader, 6Professor and Head 1-6 Department of Orthodontics, Sudha Rustagi College of Dental Sciences and Research, Faridabad, Haryana, India Corresponding Author: Sridhar Kannan, Professor, Department of Orthodontics, Sudha Rustagi College of Dental Sciences and Research Faridabad, Haryana, India, e-mail: [email protected] Fig. 2: Pasted Velcro hook tapes at the base of the storage box Received on: 13/10/11 Accepted after Revision: 5/11/11 292 JAYPEE JIOS An Innovative Method to secure Orthodontic Study Models Fig. 3: Pasted Velcro loop tapes at the base of the study models 3.
