DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE:___________________________
Drink clear liquid diet only (no solid food)
CLEAR LIQUIDS include:
 strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape, lemonade)  water
 coffee or tea (without milk or non-dairy creamer)
 Gatorade
 carbonated and non carbonated soft drinks
 clear broth or bouillon
 Kool-Aid (or other fruit flavored drinks)
Popsicles
 plain Jell-o (without added fruit or toppings)
NO RED OR PURPLE PLEASE!
Try to drink at least one glass of fluid every hour to avoid dehydration. You will want to include some
liquids with sugar throughout the day.
At 12:00 NOON, take four (4) Dulcolax (bisacodyl) tablets.
 Mix one bottle of Miralax (238gms) in 64 ounces (one-half gallon) of Gatorade. You may use any
flavor of Gatorade except red or purple. Chill prior to consumption. If diabetic, may use Crystal Light.
At 4:00 PM, begin drinking the Miralax/Gatorade solution. Try to drink one glassful every 10 – 15
minutes. It is best to drink each glass quickly rather that sipping it. The entire prep should be
consumed within 2-4 hours. Note: It takes the entire laxative solution to do a really good job of
cleansing and get an optimum exam. If your colon is not adequately cleansed, you may have to be
rescheduled.
Feelings of bloating, chills, and/or nausea are common after the first few glasses due to the large volume of fluid ingested.
This is temporary and will improve once bowel movements begin but may continue intermittently for one to two hours after
the last glass is finished. Most people have a bowel movement within an hour or two of starting the laxative. Sometimes,
there may be a delay of four hours. You just need to be patient. Remember to stay close to the bathroom.
DAY OF EXAM:
You may have clear liquids until three (3) hours before reporting for exam, then
nothing by mouth until after the exam. If your procedure is scheduled for the afternoon, you
may take your usual morning medications with the exceptions noted above.
Report to Scott and White Round Rock Hospital at 300 University Boulevard, Round Rock, TX. Please report to the
1st floor Admissions desk to check in. You may be contacted by the Endoscopy nurse the work day before your
procedure with a slightly different report time.
For any questions regarding medication or instructions, or to cancel or reschedule your procedure, please call 512509-0200. The GI Department requests that any patients needing to reschedule call at least three business
days prior to the procedure. Failure to do so may cause a delay of up to three months for the next available
appointment.
